Hello and thank you to the amazing knitters who came by to say hello, fondle, and sometimes purchase, a hank or ball or two of SIOz yarn to knit this summer. The dust is slowly settling here at SIOz Central.

Thank you also to Jonelle and Jonette at SWTC for making the SWTC selection what it is — fabulous! The hanks of Jazz and cones of String Me Along are loaded onto the webshop again. And the Tofutsies selection was nice and varied, a colour for every knitter. The Tofutsies is loaded online as well in all its glory.

Inventory must be taken. The webshop must be restocked. The orders must be mailed. And the deadlines must be met. Usual stuff.

I’ve painted both Banjara and Campfire a lot this past winter. These colours hadn’t been in my repertoire for 2 years or so — on a whim I took them out of retirement. Thank you for the thumbs up for both.

Merino 3 from Stranded In Oz

For those of you who are new to SIOz yarns, I tend to name my yarn colours after places. Timberlake is the name of the place where I spent a few summers at camp (a peculiar American tradition where parents send their kids off to be eaten by mozzies and served revolting food). Camp Timberlake will forever be etched into my memory as the place where I lived with a fair dinkum dunny for 2 weeks. Apologies, but I may have written about this previously. The scars run deep.

I plan the colours, then paint them based on the formula I’ve worked out for the colourway. Other times, I just go with whatever strikes my fancy — usually when I am using up dye at the end of a day — to not waste dye and water. Those I call wild mixes and they’re def. not repeatable colourways.

Knit, spin, and crochet in good health and happiness.

This Procrastination sock features several different colour techniques using leftover hand-painted sock yarn. Of course this version features SIOz sock yarns — fyi: there are a coupla hanks left of the Happy Little Mitey Sock used in the magazine version. .

Also in Issue 23 — the Micro Aran Sock — cables that look nice on a small, sock scale. These socks were knitted in a natural coloured Aussie sheepwool, but any 4ply/fingering weight yarn will suffice. If you haven’t any luck finding all natural, untreated 4ply sock yarn near you, email melissa@strandedinoz.com and I’ll organise some to be wound off for you from my workshop.

I’ve included the heel shot above to give you a sense of one of the design features, a nicely-fitting afterthought heel — roomy enough to fit most feet — that makes the most of the small cables running down the sides of the sock.

While I type this message, it continues to piss down with rain. It’s so unusual here in SA that it’s like I’ve dropped onto another planet. Glorious rain!

Not to fear, the wool will just take longer to dry this week — but that’s ok.

Thank you to the fab knitters and spinners who braved the crazed weather and got to the Port Markets yesterday. Note to the person who purchased some Nepal thin singles — this one just didn’t get into your shopping bag, so do email or ring and it will go straight into the post! So sorry that happened – it’s my fault. Went a-looking in the market for you, but you’d left. The yarn is safely tucked away.

The sock yarn is on the menu for this Sunday, so keep your eyes peeled for late in the week for pictures.

Australian wools in various weights

and the new shipment of soy, including SWTC’s fab Pure — for those of you who just don’t like the soy tape-type yarns, this one is plied like regular ‘ole wool. Substitute it for your old wool 8ply! SWTC soy yarns are made from 100% recycled material.

Customer colourway suggestions received this week, include Waaaay Over the Rainbow Sock, McLaren Vale Sock, and more purple.

Some Autumnal reds with purple – shown in merino tape yarn (sample) — This dyelot was run in 5ply Aussie wool as well as laceweight and the merino tape. The laceweight sold on Sunday, but the other yarns are in stock. Pure Australian Coloured Sheepwool 5ply $22.00 per 50gm grown in Victoria.
